[Solved] “Error saving media attachment.” error in WordPress

WordPress might give this error on uploading an image from media library. It means that wordpress isn’t able to save your file.

It is really easy to fix. However, this may not work for all:

Go to Settings->Media. Change the path in ‘Store uploads in this folder’ option to ‘wp-content/uploads’ (without the quotes).

If this doesn’t work you may have to change the permission of your wp-content/uploads directory to 0755. Read this to learn how to change directory permissions.

Cheers!

They’ve changed it to Settings->Media in new version. I’ll update the post to reflect the changes. Thanks :)

Does the upload folder have appropriate permissions (755)?

  • feketesas

where do I find the upload folder?

  • http://www.absolutelytech.com Deepak Mittal

    wp-contents/uploads

  • feketesas

    that’s the weird thing… in wp-content, I only have /plugins and /themes.nin the wp-admin, I have a document called uploads.php… do you mean this?

  • http://www.absolutelytech.com Deepak Mittal

Create a folder called ‘uploads’ inside wp-content. That should fix it for you.

  • feketesas

what I did… unfortunately no result either

Set the permission of that folder to 0755. You can do that using any FTP Client.

     Hi,
I came across your post and all my file permissions were correct.  I eventually found the cause of the problem.  I was running PHP5 and running php as an Apache module on my shared hosting account.  This meant that I was bound to the configuration of the default php.ini file.  So to get over this problem I made a change to run PHP5 as a CGi application.  Problem solved.

    Hope it helps someone else.

I tried everything which didn’t work. Ultimately your post pointed me to the exact error. I switched hosts and Settings->Media was set to the old URL….

    Thanks Man. Great job…

Thanks Johnny, I thought you had the answer for me, but it still won’t work for me, running PHP as CGI or FastCGI. I’m using Plesk on my hosting account.

Another reason this error will occur
Under Network Admin/ Network Settings/ Upload file types don’t use commas between file extensions

    Hi,

I’ve tried all the suggestions here, however, I’m still getting the error messages of either was unable to save media attachment or was unable to save because temporary folder could not be found.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks!
